Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
